Eni and Saipem: agreement to develop new biorefineries

Eni and Saipem have agreed to collaborate on biorefining development. It was signed today by Giuseppe Ricci, Eni’s Chief Operating Officer for Energy Evolution, and Alessandro Puliti, Saipem’s Chief Executive Officer, to assist traditional refinery transformation and the construction of new Eni biorefineries.

The agreement is in line with Eni and Saipem’s decarbonization goals, and it focuses on the study and potential construction of plants for the production of bio jet, a sustainable aviation fuel, and HVO diesel, a biofuel made from 100% renewable raw materials (in accordance with EU Directive 2018/2001 “REDII”). HVO diesel is available at Enilive service stations under the brand name HVOlution and can be used on land, sea, and rail.

The agreement calls for the use of Eni’s proprietary EcofiningTM technology in the development of new biorefineries as well as the conversion of traditional refineries, combining Eni’s extensive technological and operational experience with Saipem’s distinct expertise in the design and construction of these plants.

Eni was the first firm in the world to apply EcofiningTM technology to convert two traditional refineries in Venice, Porto Marghera, and Gela, Sicily, into biorefineries for the processing of waste feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal fats, agro-food sector leftovers, and vegetable oils. Both projects were supported by Saipem.

Eni intends to increase its biorefining capacity from 1.65 million metric tonnes per year to more than 5 million metric tonnes per year by 2030.
